October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. It was first designated as such in the 1980s and has been recognized every October since. The purpose of this month is to raise public awareness of Down syndrome, advocate for acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome, and celebrate their abilities and accomplishments. During this month, people can get involved in various ways, such as:

  • Joining the 21 Day Inclusion Challenge
  • Sending a DSAM E-card
  • Making a donation to NDSS and sending an e-card in honor of someone to celebrate this month
  • Sharing NDSS DSAM Fact Cards on social media
  • Going to their local Buddy Walk®

People with Down syndrome still face stereotypes and myths, but they’ve shown time and again that the condition is just one part of who they are and doesn’t define them or limit their abilities. That’s why it’s so important that during National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and all year long, we help spread the message of love, acceptance, inclusion, and respect.
