The name given to the process by which water moves across a membrane is called osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration (or lower solute concentration) to an area of lower water concentration (or higher solute concentration). This movement continues until the concentration is balanced or the pressure balances the osmotic pressure across the membrane.
