Canelo Álvarez is a Mexican professional boxer, born on July 18, 1990, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He has won multiple world championships in four weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those weight classes and lineal titles in two. Canelos full name is Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán, and his nickname is "Canelo," which means cinnamon in Spanish. In Mexico, it is common for people to associate red hair with the Irish soldiers who fought for Mexico in the Saint Patricks Battalion during the Mexican–American War. According to family legend, an ancestor of Canelo fought in the St Patrick’s Brigade of Irish exiles for Mexico in the 1840s war against the United States. Canelo himself has admitted, “There might have been an Irish grandfather somewhere there in my past” . However, his nationality is Mexican, and he identifies as such.
