After IUD insertion, there are certain things you should avoid doing to ensure proper healing and effectiveness of the device. Here are some things not to do after IUD insertion:
- Abstain from vaginal intercourse: Wait at least 24 hours after IUD insertion before having vaginal intercourse.
- Avoid baths and swimming: Do not take a bath or go swimming for at least 24 hours after IUD insertion.
- Do not use tampons or menstrual cups: Avoid using tampons or menstrual cups for at least 24 hours after IUD insertion.
- Avoid heavy lifting: Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the first few days after IUD insertion.
- Take pain medication: You may experience cramping and discomfort after IUD insertion. You can take over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help relieve the pain.
- Check for IUD strings: Check for the strings of the IUD by inserting one finger into the vagina and feeling for the cervix. The strings should be coming through the cervix. Check for the strings once a month during the first 3 months after IUD insertion.
- Use backup contraception: If you have a hormonal IUD, use backup contraception such as condoms for the first 7 days after insertion to prevent pregnancy. If you have a copper IUD, you do not need backup contraception.
It is important to follow these guidelines to ensure proper healing and effectiveness of the IUD. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.
