Mahalaya Amavasya is a sacred day when people perform Shradh and Tarpan rituals for all the deceased ancestors, pray to them, and seek their blessings for a successful life. Here are some things that should not be done on this day:

Consuming non-vegetarian food: One should abstain from consuming non-veg, alcohol, onion, garlic, brinjal, and masoor dal on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya as it is a sacred day. People should only consume sattvic food.

Abusing someone or indulging in conflicts: People should practice cleanliness and abstain from abusing someone or indulging in conflicts on this day.

Commencing new activities or conducting functions: Mahalaya Paksha is considered inauspicious for commencing any new activity or conducting functions such as marriage, etc. .

Using iron utensils or any object made of iron: One should not use iron utensils or any object made of iron. Instead, use silver, brass, or copper.
It is also recommended to perform Shradh rituals and Tarpan under the guidance of a qualified priest to satisfy the souls of ancestors. Failing to do so is said to upset the ancestors.
