"Nessun dorma" is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccinis opera Turandot. The opera tells the story of Princess Turandot, who sets a challenge for her suitors to guess her name. If they fail, they will be executed. The aria is sung by the operas protagonist, Calaf, who is confident in his plans to marry the princess as he has challenged her to find out his name by morning. If she cannot learn his name by the time the sun rises, she has to marry him. Although "Nessun dorma" had long been a staple of operatic recitals, Luciano Pavarotti popularized the piece beyond the opera world in the 1990s following his performance of it for the 1990 FIFA World Cup, which captivated a global audience.
