This area is responsible for the ability to perceive and share another persons emotional state. Other areas of the brain, such as the prefrontal cortex, the temporoparietal junction, and the inferior frontal gyrus, also play a role in empathy and compassion. However, the anterior insular cortex is the primary activity center of human empathy. The supramarginal gyrus, located in the parietal lobe, is also an empathy center that helps us identify the postures and gestures of others and feel what others are feeling.
