The limbic system is the area of the brain that controls human behavior and emotions, including happiness. The limbic system is a group of interconnected structures located deep within the brain, responsible for behavioral and emotional responses. The limbic cortex, which contains two structures, the cingulate gyrus and the parahippocampal gyrus, impacts mood, motivation, and judgment. The precuneus, another area of the brain, is involved in retrieving memories, maintaining your sense of self, and focusing your attention as you move about your environment. Imaging studies suggest that the happiness response originates partly in the limbic cortex and the precuneus. Additionally, the left prefrontal cortex is associated with more positive emotions, and greater activation in the left, front portion of your brain relative to the right, there is also greater well-being.
