The part of the brain that controls muscle coordination is the cerebellum. The cerebellum is located at the back of the brain, below the temporal and occipital lobes and above the brainstem. It coordinates voluntary muscle movements, helps to maintain posture, balance, and equilibrium, and times muscle actions so that the body can move smoothly. The cerebellum also has special sensors that detect shifts in balance and movement and sends signals for the body to adjust and move. In addition to its role in motor control, the cerebellum may also play a role in other cognitive functions such as processing language and mood.
