According to multiple sources, including UNESCO, NOAA, and Interesting Engineering, only about 5% of the ocean has been explored and charted by humans. This means that the vast majority of the ocean, especially its depths, remains unknown to us. Despite the central role the ocean plays in our planets balance and the appeal it has held to humans since the beginning of time, we actually know very little about its mysteries. The ocean makes up about 71% of Earths surface, and it is the biggest ecosystem on the planet, holding 99% of all habitable space in the world. The five main ocean basins, the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern Oceans, contain 94% of the worlds wildlife and 97% of all the water on our blue planet.

Its important to note that while we have mapped roughly 20% of the ocean floor using sonar technology, this does not mean that we have explored 20% of the ocean. Mapping the ocean floor is an ongoing effort, and we still have a great deal more to learn about our ocean and what resides within it.
