According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the most commonly nominated individual ancestries as a proportion of the total population in the 2021 census were English (33%), Australian (29.9%), Irish (9.5%), Scottish (8.6%), and Chinese (5.5%). However, it is important to note that the Australian Bureau of Statistics no longer collects data on race, but instead asks each Australian resident to nominate up to two ancestries each census. Therefore, it is not accurate to give a percentage of the population that is white. However, it is worth noting that a comprehensive study found that just 5% of the countrys top leaders in business, government, and academia have non-European backgrounds.
