According to the latest census in 2018, 16.5% of New Zealands population identified as Māori. As of June 2022, the estimated Māori ethnic population was 892,200, which is 17.4% of the national population. The Māori population is projected to grow in all regions of New Zealand between 2018 and 2043, with the share of Māori in the national population projected to increase to 21% by 2043.
