Some people believe that a daith piercing can help with migraines, cluster headaches, or other chronic headaches, but there is no scientific evidence or clinical trial results that support ear piercings as a solution to migraines. The proposed way for a daith piercing to help is that it serves as a form of neuromodulation, but many experts think that it’s a placebo effect. The constant pressure of the earring on a specific spot is supposed to work like acupuncture to block pain receptors in the body, but there is no way to be sure that the piercing is made on that exact spot. In fact, daith piercings are actually about 1 centimeter away from the spot where acupuncture treatments are done. While some people with migraines say they have experienced relief from their symptoms after getting a daith piercing, the only evidence that supports this is purely anecdotal, and there is no research that supports that theory. Therefore, doctors who work with migraine and other headache disorders don’t recommend daith piercings as a treatment.
