The Blue Angels currently fly the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet. They transitioned to this aircraft in 2020 and use the F/A-18E model for demonstration flights along with the F/A-18F two-seater for certain roles like backup and VIP rides. The planes used by the Blue Angels are modified versions of the fleet Super Hornet with features such as removal of weapons and installation of smoke-oil tanks for air show demonstrations. These jets remain carrier-capable and can be returned to combat duty quickly if needed. Historically, the Blue Angels have flown several aircraft types since their formation in 1946, including:

• Grumman F6F Hellcat
• Grumman F8F Bearcat
• Grumman F9F Panther and Cougar
• Grumman F11F Tiger
• McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II
• Douglas A-4F Skyhawk II
• McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet (prior to the Super Hornet)

They have also used the Lockheed C-130 Hercules (nicknamed "Fat Albert") as a support aircraft since 1970. So, the current main plane flown by the Blue Angels is the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet. This aircraft replaced the older F/A-18 Hornet after 34 years of service by the squadron.
