The race of ancient Egyptians has been a subject of debate for many years. The question of their race was raised historically as a product of the early racial concepts of the 18th and 19th centuries and was linked to models of racial hierarchy primarily. However, most modern historians and biologists consider the concept of race to be an anachronistic debate and view the whole subject of black and white as a chimera, cultural baggage from western society and imposed artificially on the ancient Egyptian society. The ancient Egyptians were a population of largely indigenous origins, and their civilization was not Mediterranean or African, Semitic or Hamitic, black or white, but all of them. The ancient Egyptian culture was directly influenced by other Afro-Asiatic speaking populations in northeastern Africa, the Middle East, or the Maghreb, or the various Nubian groups or the populations in Europe. Researchers used genetic information derived from mummies to shed light on the ancestry of the ancient Egyptians. The results suggest that the ancient Egyptians were most closely related to the peoples of the Near East, particularly from the Levant. Therefore, the ancient Egyptians were not a homogeneous group, and their skin color varied between the peoples of upper and lower Egypt. However, the ancient Egyptians themselves did not attach any form of stigma to the color of the skin, and the social pyramid was not based on hierarchical notions of race based on color.
