Darth Maul is a male Dathomirian Zabrak. He was abducted by Darth Sidious as a child and trained in the ways of the dark side of the Force. The Zabrak are a near-human carnivorous species, and their native planet is Iridonia, not Dathomir. The males of the species, known as Nightbrothers, have a crown of horns around their head with distinct markings on their skin, while the females, known as Nightsisters, are powerful magicians with pale skin. Darth Maul has typical Dathomirian features, with horns on his head, sharp yellow teeth, red skin, and markings all over his body.
