New York is a state in the Northeastern United States). The southeastern part of the state, known as Downstate, encompasses New York City, the most populous city in the United States, Long Island, the most populous island in the United States, and the lower Hudson Valley). These areas are part of the New York metropolitan area, a sprawling urban landmass, and account for approximately two-thirds of the states population). The rest of the state is often referred to as Upstate New York, which is the rural hinterland of the New York metropolitan area, comprising all of New York State but the primate city itself.
New York is divided into 10 distinct regions. These regions are:
