Sikhs follow the religion of Sikhism, which is an Indian religion and philosophy that originated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent around the end of the 15th century CE. Sikhism is a monotheistic and panentheistic religion, meaning Sikhs worship one Universal God signified by the term Ik Onkar. The religion was founded by Guru Nanak, who was the first Guru and was born in the 15th century in the Punjab region of India. Sikhs believe in the oneness of all beings and the equality of everyone, and they advocate for equality, social justice, and inclusiveness. Doing good deeds is important for Sikhs to be with God after death, and they believe that if they don’t live a life full of good deeds, they will be reborn and repeat the circle of life and death. Sikhs see the temporary distractions of the material world as an illusion, and they work to counteract the temptations of ego, anger, greed, attachment, and lust through the Sikh values of service, equality, and seeking justice for all.
