The Duggars are Independent Fundamentalist Baptists who follow the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a conservative Christian organization founded by Bill Gothard in 1961. The IBLP is a non-denominational Christian organization that is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, given in the Sermon on the Mount, as the primary source for teaching linguistics, law, history, science, and medicine. The Duggars grew up under a belief system called the IBLP, which emphasizes that children should always obey their parents, and that husbands hold authority over their wives, who hold authority over their children and workers in the household. The Duggars specific beliefs and religion are not always explicitly mentioned on television, but they have shared their modest clothing rules, their "buddy system," how they split up "jurisdictions" (chores), and how they shunned birth control. The Duggars practice courting and purity before marriage, which are also tied to their religion. Some of the older Duggar children have broken off from their familys beliefs.
