Rachel Maddow was raised in a strictly Catholic, conservative household. Her family is "very, very Catholic," and she grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative". Maddow has said that she prays every day and considers herself a practicing Roman Catholic. Despite her Catholic upbringing, Maddow has Jewish roots on her paternal side, with one-quarter of her ancestors self-identifying as Russian and Polish Jews.
