Serbia has been traditionally a Christian country since the Christianization of Serbs by Clement of Ohrid and Saint Naum in the 9th century. The dominant confession is Eastern Orthodoxy in the fold of the Serbian Orthodox Church. According to the last Census in Serbia, with regard to religious affiliation, 84.6% of the population identify as Eastern Orthodox Christians, while 5% identify as Catholic, 3.1% identify as Muslim, 1.0% identify as Protestant, and 3.1% do not declare themselves confessionally. Besides Serbs, other Eastern Orthodox Christians include Montenegrins, Romanians and Vlachs, Macedonians, Bulgarians, and the majority of Roma people. The Romanian Orthodox Church is also present in parts of Vojvodina inhabited by ethnic Romanian minority. There are also small numbers of Jews in Serbia, mostly in the cities of Belgrade, Novi Sad, Subotica, and PanĨevo. Although Serbia does not have an official religion, Eastern Orthodox Christianity has a large and influential role in society.
