Eight House Republicans voted to oust Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker on October 3, 2023. They joined with Democrats in a historic vote to remove McCarthy, which resulted in the House having to elect a new speaker. The vote in the House of Representatives on the motion to vacate was 216-210, with Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz leading the effort. The eight Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy were:
- Andy Biggs of Arizona
- Ken Buck of Colorado
- Tim Burchett of Tennessee
- Eli Crane of Arizona
- Matt Gaetz of Florida
- Bob Good of Virginia
- Nancy Mace of South Carolina
- Matt Rosendale of Montana
It is worth noting that these eight Republicans volunteered to be punished in exchange for votes to elect Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, as the new speaker, but the gesture proved to be fruitless as House Republicans voted behind closed doors against Jordan continuing his bid for the post.
