He played as a quarterback for two years and set several records, including single-game records of six touchdowns and 440 all-purpose yards. He also set a single-season school record with 2,466 total yards in 2001. After graduating from high school in 2002, he attended Butte College, a community college in nearby Oroville, California, where he played as the starting quarterback for a 2002 Roadrunners squad with a 10-1 record, a NorCal Conference championship, and a No. 2 national ranking. He then transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where he played for two years and led a vaunted offense that propelled him to break a number of school records.
