Sonia Sotomayor attended Blessed Sacrament School in Soundview for grammar school, where she was valedictorian and had a near-perfect attendance record. She then attended Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, where she was on the forensics team and was elected to the student government. She graduated as valedictorian in 1972. Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976 with a bachelors degree in history, gaining election into Phi Beta Kappa along the way. She then received her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1979, where she was an editor at the Yale Law Journal.
