Clueless is based on Jane Austens novel Emma, which was originally published in 1815. The movie is a modern adaptation of the novel, with the main character, Cher Horowitz, taking on the role of Emma Woodhouse. Both characters are wealthy, popular, and enjoy matchmaking. The movie is set in Beverly Hills in the 1990s, and it features many of the same themes and plot points as the novel, including the importance of social status and the dangers of meddling in other peoples lives.
