Between the ages of 3 and 5, children undergo significant cognitive, language, and motor development. Here are some academic milestones that a 3-year-old should be able to accomplish:

• Say their name and age
• Answer simple questions
• Recite the alphabet
• Identify basic shapes and colors
• Tell stories
• Count (to at least 10)
• Know about 300-500 words as well as understand many others
• Ask a lot of questions, such as “why?”

In addition to these academic milestones, a 3-year-old should also be able to do the following:

• Understand time better (for example, morning, afternoon, night)
• Sort objects by shape and color
• Complete age-appropriate puzzles
• Recognize and identify common objects and pictures
• Use symbols for non-present objects
• Engage in symbolic play (e.g., use a checker as a cookie)
• Have a vocabulary of at least 5,000-8,000 words
• Display empathy for a peer
• Talk in complete sentences of at least six words or more
