A newborns temperature should be between 96.8°F and 99.5°F (36°C and 37.5°C) . However, the normal temperature in babies and children can vary slightly. It is best to use a digital thermometer to get a fast, accurate reading. The most accurate reading of body temperature in infants and young children is taken rectally. The following are the temperature ranges for different methods of taking a babys temperature:
- Rectal: 100.4°F (38.0°C) or higher
- Forehead: 100.4°F (38.0°C) or higher
- Ear: 100.4°F (38.0°C) or higher (not accurate before 6 months of age)
- Armpit: 99°F (37.2°C) or higher
If a babys temperature is below the normal range, the babys temperature is considered too cold (hypothermic). If it is above the normal range, the babys temperature is considered too hot (hyperthermic) . If you think your baby has a high temperature, its best to check their temperature with a thermometer. This can help you work out whether you need to get medical advice.
