If you suffer from acid reflux, sleeping on your left side is the best position to alleviate symptoms. This is because the esophagus is located in the center of your body, but the stomach is a curved organ with the majority of its volume in the left side of the upper abdomen. Sleeping on your left side can greatly reduce reflux, while sleeping on your right side or back can make reflux more likely. When you lie flat in bed, your throat and stomach are basically at the same level, making it easy for stomach acids to flow up your esophagus, causing heartburn. To cut down on reflux symptoms when lying down, you may want to consider propping up the top of the bed by at least 6 inches. This can be achieved by raising the right section of your bed, not by stacking up the pillows, which can lead to back or neck pain and could increase pressure on the stomach.
