According to the official Nintendo website, only microSD cards can be used on the Nintendo Switch console. Due to the slot size, SD cards and miniSD cards are not compatible with the Nintendo Switch. The following types of microSD cards are supported on Nintendo Switch:
- microSD (up to 2 GB)
- microSDHC (4 GB - 32 GB)
- microSDXC (64 GB - 2 TB)
In order to use a microSDXC card on the Nintendo Switch console, a system update is required. It is recommended to use a microSD card with a higher transfer speed to improve the gameplay experience. High-speed microSD card guidelines are:
- UHS-I (Ultra High Speed Phase I) compatible
- Transfer speed 60 - 95 MB/sec (the higher the transfer speed, the better gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch)
The amount of memory you need depends on how many Switch games you buy and whether they are physical or digital copies. If you prefer buying physical copies of games, a smaller-capacity card like a 16GB or 32GB microSD card should be fine. However, if you prefer downloading digital games, it is recommended to aim for the biggest microSD card you can afford. The average first-party Nintendo Switch game sits at around 6.7GB, so a 64GB card is the minimum recommended size. If you plan on purchasing several large Switch games, a 128GB or 256GB card is recommended. The Nintendo Switch can accommodate microSD cards up to 2TB in size, but currently, the largest microSD card available is 1TB.
