The ideal temperature range for painting outside depends on the type of paint being used. For water-based exterior paint, the temperature should be at least 50°F when applying the paint and shouldnt drop below 32°F at night for several days after. For latex paint, the ideal temperature range is between 50°F to 85°F, with little to no wind. Oil-based paint can be applied when the temperatures are between 40°F to 90°F. However, it is best to avoid painting in temperatures above 90°F or below 50°F. If you must paint in lower temperatures, you can use specially formulated latex paint made to perform in temperatures as low as 35°F, but the air and surface temperatures should not drop below 35°F for at least 36 hours after application. Painting in extreme temperatures can affect the longevity of the paint job, and colder temperatures can cause the paint to not adhere well to the surface, resulting in cracking and peeling.
