However, the temperature in which red wine should be stored can be subjective depending on personal tastes, but in general, 55-65°F (12-19°C) is the sweet spot for red wine. Here are some more specific temperature ranges for different types of red wine:

  • Light, fruity red wines like Lambrusco and Pinot Noir should be stored at lower temperatures, preferably around 56°F (13°C) .
  • Medium red wines such as Merlot and Sherry should be stored from 57°F (14°C) up to 60°F (16°C) depending on their strength.
  • Full-bodied red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Bordeaux, and Port should be stored at slightly warmer temperatures of around 60-65°F (16-19°C) .

Its important to avoid rapid, extreme, or frequent temperature swings, as this can push the corks in and out of the bottle and ruin the wine in the process. Additionally, the humidity level should be around 70% to help prevent the cork from drying out. If you have a temperature and humidity-controlled wine fridge, cellaring your wine can be easy. All you need to do is keep the temperature of the fridge somewhere in the low to mid 50’s (10-13°C), which applies to all varietals of white or red wine. If you dont have a wine fridge, you can use a closet or storage space centrally located within your home, or a basement that is well insulated.
