The temperature at which frost occurs can vary depending on the duration of the frost and the type of plant. Frost occurs when air temperatures dip below 32°F and ice crystals form on plant leaves, injuring and sometimes killing tender plants. A light frost happens when the ground is still warm enough to give off heat and protect the bottom of the plant, but the top of the plant may have some damage. A hard frost (also known as a killing frost) can occur when the ground temperature drops below zero Celsius. Below are some temperature ranges that can cause frost damage to plants:

• Frost Advisory: 32°F to 36°F (0°C to 2.2°C)
• Light Freeze: 29°F to 32°F (-2°C to 0°C)
• Moderate Freeze: 25°F to 28°F (-4°C to -2°C)
• Severe Freeze: 24°F (-4°C) and colder

Its important to note that the duration of the frost is also a factor in determining the extent of damage to plants. When temperatures are expected to dip near or below freezing, its recommended to utilize strategies to temporarily protect your plants, such as covering them with blankets or tarps.
