To clean tile floors, you will need the following items:

  • Soft-bristle broom or vacuum attachment
  • Microfiber mop or cloth or spray mop
  • Water bucket
  • Mild detergent
  • Clean, dry microfiber cloth

Here are the steps to clean tile floors:

  1. Get rid of loose dirt: All tile floors need to be vacuumed or swept before they’re washed. Use a vacuum attachment with soft bristles or a soft-bristle broom to remove dirt, dust, hair, and debris.

  2. Mix a mild detergent and water in a large bucket: Less is more when adding detergent to your water as too much can make rinsing difficult. For the right ratio, mix ¼ cup of a mild detergent, like Mr. Clean Multi-Surface Cleaner, into 1 gallon of water.

  3. Submerge a microfiber mop or cloth in the solution: While it’s tempting to grab a sponge to quickly wash your bathroom tile floor by hand, you could end up with unsightly streaks or water spots if you’re using too much water. Since sponges naturally retain water, it’s best to use a microfiber mop or cloth.

  4. Wash and dry one section of the floor at a time: Use the mop or cloth to clean the floor, starting at the farthest corner of the room and working your way towards the door. Rinse the mop or cloth frequently in the bucket of cleaning solution and wring it out well before continuing. Dry the floor with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

For unpolished or unglazed porcelain tile floors, use a soft bristle brush and scrub a mixture of vinegar and warm water. Allow the floor to stay wet for 5 to 10 minutes. Then rinse with hot water and wipe dry with a clean towel or microfiber cloth. For polished or glazed porcelain tile, wipe with hot water and scrub stains with a bristle brush. Wash with vinegar solution or a commercial tile cleaner diluted to half strength. Wash one more time with hot water to rinse off the cleaner, then dry with a clean towel. Avoid using bleach or ammonia on porcelain tile floors. For natural stone tile floors, sweep with a soft broom and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner. Do not use vinegar or chemicals on granite or marble tile floors. Instead, use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner that is safe for natural stone.
