Earaches can be caused by a variety of factors, including ear infections, changes in air pressure, foreign objects in the ear, injury to the ear or eardrum, and a buildup of earwax. While some earaches may require medical attention, many can be treated at home with the following remedies:
-
Warm or cold compress: Soak a washcloth in either warm or cool water, wring it out, and then place it over the ear thats bothering you. Try both temperatures to see which one helps you more than the other.
-
Over-the-counter pain relievers: Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen can often relieve the pain of an earache. Ask your doctor which is right for you.
-
Chewing gum: If your ear pain is from the change in air pressure, such as when youre on an airplane or driving at high altitudes, chewing gum can help lower that pressure and ease your symptoms.
-
Rest: Sleeping and resting strengthens the immune system and helps your body fight off infections and other sickness. But it’s best not to sleep on your infected ear – and not just because it’s uncomfortable.
-
Saltwater gargle: Add one teaspoon salt to one cup of warm water and gargle it for a couple of minutes. If your ear infection is related to a swollen throat, this can help reduce your symptoms.
Its important to note that if your ear pain persists for more than two or three days or gets worse, you should talk to your healthcare provider. Additionally, if you notice fluid (such as pus or blood) oozing out of your ear, you should seek medical attention.
