Bee stings can cause pain, swelling, and itching. Here are some steps you can take to reduce swelling caused by a bee sting:
- Remove the stinger as soon as possible, such as by scraping it off with a fingernail. Dont try to remove a stinger below the skin surface.
- Wash the affected area with soap and water.
- Apply a cold compress to the sting area. You can wrap an ice pack in a towel and place it on your skin to reduce swelling. Do this for 20 minutes.
- Elevate the affected area of your body, if possible.
- Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to ease redness, itching, or swelling.
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed. You might try ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) to help ease discomfort.
- If itching or swelling is bothersome, take an oral antihistamine that contains diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or chlorpheniramine.
- Avoid scratching the sting area, as this will worsen itching and swelling and increase your risk of infection.
If you experience symptoms of anaphylactic shock, such as difficulty breathing or dizziness, call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately.
