Ear infections can be painful and uncomfortable, but there are several things you can do to help alleviate the symptoms. Here are some options to try:
At-home remedies:
- Over-the-counter (OTC) pain and fever relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help relieve pain and reduce fever.
- A warm compress can help reduce ear pain. Soak a washcloth in warm water, wring out the excess water, and then hold it against the infected ear for up to 20 minutes. If the compress seems to help with the pain, reapply it throughout the day.
- Resting and sleeping can strengthen the immune system and help the body fight off infections and other sickness.
- Saltwater gargles can help reduce inflammation. Add one teaspoon of salt to one cup of warm water and gargle it for a couple of minutes. If the ear infection is related to a swollen throat, this can help reduce symptoms.
- Drying eardrops can help dry up any fluid in the ear and relieve pain.
Medical treatments:
- Antibiotics are not always necessary for ear infections, as most infections clear up on their own within one to two weeks without any treatment. However, if the infection is severe or lasts longer than 2-3 days, antibiotics may be needed.
- Anesthetic drops can be used to relieve pain if the eardrum doesnt have a hole or tear in it.
- If an infection causes serious complications, fluid remains in the ear for a long time, or the patient has ear infections that keep coming back, a procedure called a myringotomy may be necessary. This involves creating a small hole in the eardrum so fluids such as water, blood, or pus can drain out. In many cases, a tube is inserted to prevent the fluid from backing up again.
Its important to note that decongestants, antihistamines, and cold medicines wont cure an ear infection, and theres no evidence that they help with ear infections. If you or your child have earache that does not start to get better after 3 days, regular ear infections, or any fluid coming out of the ear, its best to see a doctor.
