Constipation in babies can be a cause of worry for parents, but it is usually not a serious issue. Here are some things you can do to help relieve baby constipation:

  • Offer water or fruit juice: If your baby is old enough to drink water, offer extra drinks (boiled and cooled first) or a daily serving of 100% apple, prune, or pear juice in addition to usual feedings. These juices contain sorbitol, a sweetener that acts like a natural laxative.

  • Adjust diet: If youre breastfeeding, your baby eats what youre eating. Eliminate any foods from your diet that may cause constipation. If your baby eats formula, consider trying a different formula. If your baby eats solid foods, they may benefit from foods that are good sources of fiber, such as pureed broccoli or carrot, whole grains, or pureed peaches, pears, or prunes.

  • Perform a belly massage: Gently massage your babys tummy in a clockwise direction. Make firm but gentle circular motions from the belly button outwards. Lie your baby on their back and gently move their legs backwards and forwards in a bicycle motion. A gentle massage may help relieve constipation.

  • Give a warm bath: Give your baby a warm bath to relax their bowel. A warm bath can help calm and settle your baby and relieve discomfort.

  • Offer glycerin suppositories: If it has been a few days since your baby has pooped and the above remedies have not worked, then you can try a glycerin suppository. Glycerin suppositories are only meant for occasional use.

It is important to note that if your baby is experiencing other symptoms such as vomiting or weakness, or if constipation persists despite dietary changes, you should contact your babys healthcare provider.
