Hip pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including muscle or tendon strain, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Here are some steps you can take to alleviate hip pain:

  • Rest: Stop the physical activity that caused the pain to avoid making the injury worse.

  • Ice: Apply an ice pack or cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes every hour for the first day after your injury. After one day, you can apply ice every three to four hours. Don’t apply ice directly to your skin (wrap the ice pack in a towel or washcloth) .

  • Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®), ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin IB®, others), and naproxen sodium (Aleve®) may help ease hip pain. Prescription anti-inflammatory medications such as corticosteroids, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate and sulfasalazine, and biologics, which target the immune system, may also be recommended by your healthcare provider.

  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help alleviate hip pain by strengthening the muscles around the hip joint and improving flexibility.

  • Heat or cold therapy: Gently applying a heat pad or an ice pack can help alleviate discomfort and help you get hip pain relief.

  • Weight loss: If you’re carrying some excess weight, losing weight may help reduce pressure on your hips and alleviate pain.

If your hip pain is severe or lasts for more than a few days, its important to see a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
