In case of a fire, it is important to act quickly and follow these steps:

  1. Get out: If you notice a fire, immediately leave the building or area. Do not try to grab any belongings or valuables. If you live in a building with elevators, use the stairs. Leave all your things where they are and save yourself.

  2. Call for help: Once you are outside, call 911 or your local emergency phone number. If you cannot get to your meeting place, follow your family emergency communication plan.

  3. Dont go back in: Do not go back into the building or area for any reason, even to retrieve pets or valuables. Wait for the fire department to arrive.

  4. Use a fire extinguisher: If you know how to safely operate a fire extinguisher and the fire is small, you may attempt to extinguish it. Aim the extinguisher nozzle, horn, or nose at the base of the fire from a safe distance.

  5. Stay low: If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit. Close doors behind you. If youre in a room with the door closed when the fire breaks out, check to see if theres heat or smoke coming in the cracks around the door. If there is, do not open the door. Instead, use your second way out.

  6. Signal for help: If smoke, heat, or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with doors closed. Place a wet towel under the door and call the fire department or 911. Open a window and wave a brightly colored cloth or flashlight to signal for help.

Remember to remain calm and act quickly in case of a fire. It is also important to have a fire escape plan in place and to practice it regularly with your family or roommates.
