Navratri is a nine-night celebration dedicated to the worship of the divine goddess Durga. Each day of Navratri holds special significance and rituals, and the first day marks the beginning of this auspicious period. Here are some things you can do on the first day of Navratri:
-
Clean and decorate your puja room: Clean your puja room and decorate it with flowers and other auspicious items.
-
Set up a small altar for Goddess Durga: Set up a small altar for Goddess Durga and place her idol or picture on it.
-
Perform Ghatasthapana: Ghatasthapana is the ritual of installing a pot at a sanctified place at home, and a lamp is lit inside for nine days. Mud and navadhanya seeds are placed in a pan to which water is added. A kalash filled with Ganga Jal, some coins, supari, and akshat (raw rice and turmeric powder) is placed in the place of worship. Five mango leaves are placed around the kalash and covered with coconut. Devotees also place an oil lamp, incense sticks, flowers, fruits, and sweets near Maa Shailputri.
-
Fast: Many devotees fast during Navratri as a way to show their devotion to Goddess Durga. Fasting is believed to purify the body and mind and to make the devotee more receptive to her blessings. If you are fasting, you should avoid eating meat, eggs, fish, onions, garlic, and alcohol. You should also avoid eating any processed foods or foods that contain artificial additives.
-
Perform Shailputri Puja: On the first day of Chaitra Navratri, devotees of Maa Durga worship Maa Shailputri to seek her blessings for the well-being of their families. During the puja, she is offered jasmine flowers as the first Navadurga revered on the first day of Navratri.
