If you have a loose bracket on your braces, there are several steps you can take to manage the situation until you can get to your orthodontist for a repair:
- Evaluate the issue: Determine which tooth the bracket feels loose on, whether its the only bracket with an issue, and whether its causing any discomfort.
- Evaluate why this happened: Consider whether you bit into something hard or sticky, have been neglecting your brushing, have been brushing too aggressively, or if this tooth lost a bracket in the past.
- Call your orthodontist: Contact your orthodontists office as soon as possible to schedule a repair appointment. They can also give you advice on what to do in the meantime.
- Secure the broken bracket: If the bracket comes completely off a back tooth and its bothering you, you can carefully slide it off of your wire. Put it in an envelope or container and bring it with you to your appointment. For a loose or broken bracket in the front of the mouth, gently move the bracket into its correct position. Use a piece of clean tissue or gauze to dry the bracket. Then, break off a piece of orthodontic relief wax and place it over the bracket to hold it in place until your appointment.
- Use wax or gum without sugar: If the bracket is causing discomfort, you can use wax or gum without sugar to alleviate the pain while you wait for your appointment.
- Avoid hard or sticky foods: To prevent future bracket breakage, avoid eating hard foods (candy, ice, nuts, popcorn, gum, bagels, pita chips), biting down hard directly on one of the lower braces, and other bad habits like fingernail biting or chewing on pens or pencils.
Its important to contact your orthodontist as soon as possible to schedule a repair appointment, as leaving a loose bracket untreated can cause further damage to your braces and teeth.
