A blood blister on the finger can be treated at home with the following steps:
-
Clean the blister: After washing your hands, gently wash the blood blister with mild soap and water.
-
Apply an antibacterial cream or ointment: This will help prevent infection.
-
Protect the blister: Place a bandage or gauze over the blood blister to protect the area. Make sure to change your bandage at least once a day.
-
Keep the area clean and dry: This will help the blister heal faster.
-
Elevate and apply ice: If you experience pain, you may want to apply an ice pack to the area. You can also try an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (Advil®).
It is important not to pop the blister or peel away the skin around it, as the skin over the blood blister protects deeper layers of your skin from getting infected. If the blister hurts, you can apply ice wrapped in a towel to it. You may find it helpful to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) to ease the pain. If the blood blister is painful and needs to be drained, contact your doctor.
