If you find an injured pigeon, heres what you can do:
- Approach the bird slowly and quietly from behind, pointed away from traffic, so as not to scare it.
- Observe the bird closely to see how hurt it is before deciding to take it to a local vet or wildlife rehabilitator.
- If you need to handle the pigeon, wear gloves as wild pigeons can carry diseases.
- Gently but firmly grab the bird by putting one or two hands over its wings.
- Put the bird into an unwaxed paper bag, cloth tote bag, or box.
- Make sure you close the container completely, so the bird doesnt try to escape as it begins to come to its senses.
- If you cant transport the bird to a rehabber yourself, contact a local animal hospital or wildlife rehabilitator.
- If you have trouble helping the pigeon, seek help at Palomacys Help Group or the Pigeon Talk website.
Its important to note that if the bird is gasping, shaking, bleeding, or vomiting, take it to an avian veterinarian immediately.
