After an IUD insertion, it is normal to experience some cramping and spotting, which usually goes away within 3-6 months. The cramping can be relieved with heating pads, Tylenol (acetaminophen), Aspirin or Advil (ibuprofen) . Irregular bleeding and spotting is also common for the first few months after the IUD is placed, and in some cases, women may experience irregular bleeding or spotting for up to six months after the IUD is placed. The bleeding can be annoying at first but usually becomes lighter with the Mirena IUD quickly. The period will likely be shorter and lighter with a Mirena IUD, and approximately 40% of women will stop having periods altogether with the Mirena IUD. However, the period may be heavier and longer with the Paragard IUD. It is also normal to feel some cramping or pain during the insertion process, but the pain usually only lasts for a minute or two. Some doctors recommend taking pain medicine before the IUD insertion to help prevent cramps, and they might inject a local numbing medicine around the cervix to make it more comfortable. It is also possible to feel dizzy during or right after the IUD is put in, and theres a small chance of fainting. It is recommended to ask someone to come with you to the appointment so you dont have to drive or go home alone, and to give yourself some time to relax afterward.
