The PSAT is a 2-hour and 14-minute exam that tests your reading, writing, and math skills. It includes two sections: Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math, comprised of three tests: Reading, Writing & Language, and Math. The Reading and Writing Section includes 47 questions and lasts 60 minutes, while the Math Section includes 48 questions and lasts 70 minutes. The PSAT Math Test is divided into four content areas: Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Topics in Math. The PSAT does not include an essay.
On the PSAT, you will receive a score ranging from 10 to 40 on each of the three tests (Reading, Writing & Language, and Math) as well as a score ranging from 160 to 760 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and for Math. Your overall PSAT score will range from 320 to 1520 and is calculated by adding your two area scores together. In addition to your overall scores, you will receive subscores that provide a deeper analysis of your PSAT performance. The PSAT also gives you a percentile ranking, which allows you to compare your scores with those of other high school juniors who took the test.
For the PSAT 8/9, the test is broken down into 55 minutes for reading, 30 minutes for writing and language, and 60 minutes for math. Across those components, there are 42 questions or tasks for reading, 40 for writing and language, and 38 for math. For all versions of the PSAT, the College Board has established benchmarks. Students in the eighth grade taking the PSAT 8/9 should earn a 390 on the reading and writing section and a 430 on math. On the same test, students in the ninth grade should earn a 410 in reading and writing and a 450 in math.
The PSAT is a timed test, and it is important to manage your time effectively. Experts say that generally, the PSAT is a low-stakes test unless a student is aiming for a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship or one of the special scholarships. To prepare for the PSAT, it is recommended to practice for the SAT, as the two tests are almost identical.
