At four weeks old, kittens are ready to start the weaning process. Here are some tips on what to feed a 4-week-old kitten:
- Mix kitten formula with wet food and either let the kittens eat it themselves from a dish or feed them the mixture with a kitten-specific bottle.
- Gradually adjust the mixture so it’s more wet food and less formula. Once the kittens can eat wet food, start mixing formula with dry food, too.
- Provide the kittens with water at all times.
- Feed kittens two or three times a day, like an adult cat.
- When bottle feeding, feed kittens on their stomachs—not their backs—and tilt the bottle. After they’re done eating, you need to burp the kittens. Put them on your shoulder or on their stomachs and pat them gently until they burp. Clean kittens using a warm, damp washcloth after you feed them.
- Start litter box training by providing the kittens with a small, shallow litter pan with non-clumping litter. Show kittens the litter box and they should quickly start using it out of instinct.
- When feeding gruel, offer 1/2 can per kitten of gruel in a dish and dry kitten food in a dish, and a dish full of water at all times. Plus formula three times per day.
- During the weaning process, kittens still need to be bottle-fed three times per day (about every 8 hours) to ensure they are receiving proper nutrients.
Remember to look for food with a soft texture that is easy for your kittens baby teeth to chew. Also, look for flavors that your kitten enjoys to help them acquire a taste for solid food and encourage them to eat.
