If you have found a baby squirrel with closed eyes, it is important to take care of it properly. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Rehydrate the baby squirrel: Before feeding the baby squirrel anything else, feed it a few meals of Pedialyte or a mixture of half a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of sugar in two cups of water. Hold the baby squirrel upright in one hand and fill an eye dropper or syringe with Pedialyte. Feed the squirrel as much fluid as it will take, until its belly is full and round but not overly bloated.

2. Keep the baby squirrel warm: If the baby squirrel still has its eyes closed, it will need a heat source to help it keep warm. Even on hot summer days, baby squirrels can get chilled quickly. A soda bottle filled with hot water and covered with a sock can be placed near the babies. You can also create a make-shift nest around the baby squirrel by placing bottles full of warm water under a blanket, towel, or old clothing. Surround the baby with warmth, but do not cover it.

3. Feed the baby squirrel: The best thing to feed a baby squirrel with closed eyes is a 1cc syringe with a Catac nipple attached to the end. You can also use a fruit-flavored or unflavored Pedialyte or other infant hydrating fluid. Never feed the babies any kind of cow’s milk or soymilk, as these milks are quick killers for wildlife. Please DON’T use homemade formulas that can be found on the Internet. Young squirrel babies who still have their eyes closed or who have just opened their eyes will need to be stimulated to urinate and have a bowel movement. You stimulate the baby by wiping its abdomen and genital area with a warm damp cloth.

4. Burp the baby squirrel: Baby squirrels do not need to be burped like baby humans do. However, while its eyes are closed, you need to help your squirrel eliminate waste after every feeding. Its mother would do it by gently licking its genitals, so you are going to replicate that process by wiping its abdomen and genital area with a warm damp cloth.
