Feeding a kitten from home requires a balanced diet that provides all the necessary nutrients for growth and development. Here are some foods that can be fed to kittens:

  • Kitten food: A good quality kitten food or a food labeled for all feline life stages should be the primary food for kittens. Canned kitten food is recommended for very young kittens as they have small teeth and cant chew dry food well. As kittens grow, they can be introduced to dry food as well. It is important to choose a high-quality kitten food that provides all the necessary nutrients for growth and development.

  • Meat: Kittens can be offered bits of cooked beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, venison, or other lean meats. Fatty meats, greasy fried meats, or those with salts, nitrates, or preservatives should be avoided. Hot dogs, bacon, or sausage can upset a kittens digestive system and cause diarrhea. When giving meat, it should be diced or shredded into tiny pieces to avoid choking.

  • Fish: Fresh and saltwater fish can be fed to kittens. Boiled fish is recommended as raw fish may cause dysentery. Fish should be given in small amounts and not as a primary food source.

  • Eggs: Scrambled eggs can be fed to kittens. Eggs should not be too oily as kittens dont like too oily eggs. Boiled eggs are also a good option.

  • Vegetables: Although cats are obligate carnivores, adding some vegetables to a kittens diet can add fiber and some vitamins and minerals. A few broccoli florets or some finely diced lettuce or other salad greens can be offered. A pinch at a time is plenty. Squash and pumpkin are also good options.

It is important to avoid feeding kittens the following substances as they are toxic to kittens and cats: alcohol, onions, onion powder, garlic, chocolate, coffee or caffeine products, mouldy or spoiled foods or compost, avocado, bread dough, yeast dough, grapes, raisins, sultanas, currants, nuts, fruit stones or ‘pits’, fruit seeds, corncobs, tomatoes, mushrooms, cooked bones, small pieces of raw bone, fatty trimmings/fatty foods, salt, and roughly-cut vegetables.

Kittens should be offered food at least four times per day, and clean fresh drinking water should be available at all times. Milk should not be provided as it can cause gastrointestinal upsets. Kittens should not be fed puppy or dog food as it will be deficient in taurine, an essential protein that cats can only obtain through food.
