In Stardew Valley, chickens are one of the first animals that players can get, and they produce eggs and big eggs that can be used for a variety of things. To keep chickens happy and maintain their Friendship Level, players need to feed them. There are two different foods that chickens will eat: hay and fresh grass. Heres how to feed chickens in Stardew Valley:

Feeding Chickens with Hay

  • To feed chickens with hay, players need to place hay in the feeding bench inside the coop.
  • Hay can be purchased from Marnie for 50g each or harvested from grass by using a scythe.
  • Players can only harvest hay from grass if they have a silo that isnt filled. Silos can be constructed like any other farm building through Robin.
  • Once players have upgraded their coop to the Deluxe Coop, the hay will automatically transfer from the silo to the Deluxe Coop, so players will no longer need to manually place their hay to feed their chickens.

Feeding Chickens with Fresh Grass

  • Players can let their chickens out of the coop by clicking on the little panel that looks like a garage door. The chickens will wander over to grass wherever it can be found and eat it. This even comes with the bonus of making them like the player more.
  • At the start of each season, grass will grow naturally on the players farm, and players should cut it using a scythe to harvest the hay to feed their chickens in Stardew Valley.
  • If players dont have enough grass to get by, they can head down to Marnies Ranch and buy hay for 50g a piece.

Its important to keep the feeding bench full of hay or fresh grass whenever players go inside the coop, so it will always be there when the chickens need it.
