Karwa Chauth is a significant Hindu festival celebrated by married women in India. During this festival, women observe a day-long fast from sunrise until moonrise to seek the well-being and long life of their husbands. The pre-dawn meal, referred to as ‘Sargi’, plays a vital role in assisting women in sustaining this day-long fast. Here are the items that are traditionally included in a Karwa Chauth thali:
Karwa Chauth Sargi Thali:
- Fresh fruits like berries, oranges, pomegranate, banana, and apple.
- Dry fruits like cashews, almonds, raisins, and pistachios.
- Cooked food like mathris, a light roti or two, a simple sabji, and halwa.
- Sweets like mithai or Indian sweets.
- Coconut water.
- A Karwa or an earthen pot topped with a nozzle, which symbolizes peace and prosperity.
- A lamp or a diya, which is a must-have.
- A sieve or a chalni, which is important as the newlywed watches the moon from this and then sees the face of her husband.
- A water container.
- A chunni or dupatta to cover the thali as it’s believed this will protect it from nazar (evil eye) .
- A steel glass filled with water, 1 teaspoon milk & pinch of sugar & rice. It’s kept for the evening and chand puma and placed outside of the Thali.
Its important to note that these are the traditions followed by some families, and each family may have their own take on traditions.
